I got into computers at a young age (relatively – young at that time). I was the first kid I knew to own a computer. I built my first computer with my dad when I was like 13. I also did IT work part-time through college.
But I never got into programming, web design, or anything like that. I just appreciated PC’s for what they were capable of and maintained an above-average understanding.
I always heard that having a website built for you was very affordable, so I figured why bother – I can always pay someone to do it for me. The technology changes quite frequently and it wasn’t knowledge I was interested in keeping up-to-date. Well, if you already have a business that makes good money and a website will help you make even more, then yes – having one built for you is very affordable. However, if you’re trying to get a small business off the ground and don’t have an extra $3 – $5k, paying to have a website built can be a pretty expensive startup cost.
My lack of coding or designing knowledge has never been more present than when I started this blog. I knew all about WordPress(the blogging platform I & most others use), but I had no idea how to make the site look like I wanted. I still don’t – in case you haven’t noticed how bland the site currently is.
But I’m working on it. I now have an okay understanding of it – I just haven’t had much practice. I’m working on building a (very) basic website for my wife’s business right now. Eventually, I hope to be able to do some things for my dropship site as well.
Reading other entrepreneur blogs can make you feel like Computer Programming/Design knowledge is necessary and the only way to get into business these days. In fact, that’s why I started this blog – because I don’t want that to be a primary way that I build a business.
While I have enjoyed the learning process – ultimately, website design/programming is not an interest of mine. I will do what I have to for now, but it’s a matter of time until I will pay to have it done professionally.
However, it is still important for me to have a basic level of understanding on these issues, because I am ultimately responsible for these sites – every Entrepreneur is. The more I understand it, the better I can explain my wants/needs, and the better I can judge the performance of a contracted worker.
